Frequently asked questions

Layout creation when using DIGITAL METAL®
  • What should be considered when planning a design for a DIGITAL METAL® application?

    It is advisable to take DIGITAL METAL® into consideration from the outset in the product design and all project decision making. The use of DIGITAL METAL® should be planned before the design is finalized. This helps ensuring a harmonious design without the effect of something superimposed

  • Is DIGITAL METAL® suitable for partial or full-surface decoration?

    For both. In general, it should be investigated from case to case whether partial foil application can enhance the design more effectively than a full-surface application.

  • Can spatial effects be realized with DIGITAL METAL® foil?

    The foil reduces the spatial effect somewhat. It is therefore not recommendable to cover three-dimensional designs completely with foil.

  • How can a design be emphasized with DIGITAL METAL®?

    If something needs to be emphasized, it is also possible to take the opposite approach, i.e. to apply foil to the surrounding area in order to accentuate the design element.

    DIGITAL METAL® is wonderfully suited for creating a secondary design layer. For example, foil can be used for good effects to superimpose a design on a large patterned area.

  • Are sharp designs suitable for DIGITAL METAL®?

    Designs with sharp edges are suitable for DIGITAL METAL®. Soft transitions, on the other hand, can appear unclean. The required resolution would be too high for this process.

  • Can DIGITAL METAL® be used for rendering light areas?

    The DIGITAL METAL® itself has a gray colour value. This makes it unsuitable for rendering light areas. It is therefore better to exclude the foil from light areas.

    An alternative solution that KURZ recommends is to use the DIGITAL DIFFRACTION® design. The holographic foil reflects the light differently than the silver-coloured foil and therefore appears lighter. Their rainbow designs also deliver striking colour reflections.

  • Can DIGITAL METAL® be used for rendering dark areas?

    The light-reflecting foil turns black into a shimmering dark gray. To achieve a deep black colour, the foil should therefore be excluded from these areas.

Overprinting of DIGITAL METAL®
  • Can sheets be overprinted after application of DIGITAL METAL®?


    The DIGITAL METAL® reduces the brightness value of the printing inks. It is therefore necessary to select a lighter colour tone when overprinting.

  • What should be considered for the overprinting of DIGITAL METAL®?

    When DIGITAL METAL® is overprinted with fine lines or lettering, the foil sheen reduces the contrast. A higher line thickness will make the printed design more recognizable or readable. The contrast is also relatively low when overprinting with a light colour. In this case it is recommended to increase the ink coverage.

    When silver-coloured DIGITAL METAL® foils are overprinted with specific proportions of cyan, magenta, yellow and black, it is possible to produce a gold colour tone. The gold can be created in all possible gradations from light gold tones to almost bronze-coloured deep gold nuances. 100 % silver foil + 0% cyan + 10% magenta + 100% yellow and 0% black can be used to create a pure, light gold; without the silver foil, this tone corresponds to a slightly reddish yellow. By overprinting various proportions of process colours it is possible to produce a variety of custom metallic colour tones. KURZ can provide specific examples of this on request.

Substrates for DIGITAL METAL®
  • Do different papers affect the foil finish when using DIGITAL METAL®?

    Yes. High-quality coated and smooth paper as well as cardboard are ideally suited for achieving an outstanding rendering of metallic colour tones and effects.

    Glossy photo printing paper varieties fulfil these requirements very well. Matt coated papers deliver a less smooth surface.

    Uncoated and structured paper varieties are also suitable for DIGITAL METAL®, but need sometimes more than one layer of toner.

    Please keep in mind when using paper with primered surface for DIGITAL METAL®, the foil will be transferred not only to the tonered areas but can also transfer to the primered areas.

  • Are there any recommendations for substrates which can be used for DIGITAL METAL®?

    Photo printing materials are particularly suitable for DIGITAL METAL® because they do not fully absorb the toner layer. Here are a few examples of photo printing materials that have been successfully tested for DIGITAL METAL® applications:

    Furthermore, the following cardboard materials are ideally suited for DIGITAL METAL® applications:

  • What is the minimum and maximum paper thickness for DIGITAL METAL® application?

    Paper in the range 90 - 350 g/m² can be used for DIGITAL METAL® applications.

  • Can DIGITAL METAL® be applied to plastic materials?


Settings for DM-LINER®
  • What are the ideal machine settings for achieving good results with DIGITAL METAL®?
    • Foil tension should be kept as low as possible, but not so low as to cause creasing
    • Good transfer results can be achieved at a machine speed between 10 – 30 m/min. The results at higher speed are very dependent on the substrate and design
    • The stamping temperature should be between 140°C and 170°C.
    • The contact pressure should be around 5000 N
    • The distance between two running sheets in the DM-LINER® machine should be around 5 mm. This setting can be entered and changed in the menu of the DM-LINER® according to the paper format (paper format + 5 mm).
  • What should be done if DIGITAL METAL® is not fully transferred to the tonered areas?
    • Control of the toner layer, maybe two layers of toner are necessary due to the roughness of the substrate
    • Increase the contact pressure
    • Increase the temperature
    • Reduce speed
  • Why is DIGITAL METAL® sometimes adhering to locations outside the tonered image?

    Reason 1: Toner is “splashing” onto locations outside of the design. This can be avoided if toner layer is adjusted and digital press is cleaned up

    Reason 2: When using paper with a primered surface, the foil will be transferred to the paper as well. This can be avoided by using paper without a primered surface.

  • How can pinholes be eliminated in the surface?
    • Control of the toner layer
    • Apply two layers of toner
    • Increase the temperature
  • How to eliminate the problem of “foil breaking up”?
    • Change the release angle
    • Adjust the foil tension
    • Check the toner layer
    • Adjust the temperature
